The focus of this year’s Hedgehog Awareness Week (May 1-7), organised by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, is firmly on gardeners
BHPS is asking gardeners to check areas carefully before using any machinery. They have produced a sticker to be placed onto machines, and are asking councils and tool hire companies to get in touch and request the free stickers for their machines.
Their other tips for hedgehog-friendly gardening are:
= Ensure there is hedgehog access into and out of your garden by creating a 13 by 13cm (5 by 5in) gap in fences and walls.
= Move piles of rubbish to a new site before burning them.
= Ensure netting is kept at a safe height.
= Check compost heaps before digging the fork in.
= Do not use pesticides and other poisons (or use them less).
= Cover drains or deep holes.
= Ensure there is an easy route out of ponds and pools.
