Brighten your outlook with National Houseplant Week

With National Houseplant week taking place (10th-16th January) and reports found that January is one of the hardest months of the year.

Research shows that MORE than 25% of Brits have the ‘January Blues’ and admit to feeling more miserable than they do at any other time of the year.

However, studies show that plants can provide some mental health benefits and that constantly seeing and being around plants help us feel more calm and relaxed. Additionally caring for them can also reduce stress levels and boost our mood.

With this in mind experts at Sutton Manor Nursery have put together a list of the best houseplants to help with stress this national houseplant week. 

Research has shown plants in the home can reduce tension in people by almost 40%, the following plants are cost effective and great for beginners.

  • Aloe Vera – Praised for its anti-inflammatory properties, plus, it helps remove harmful chemicals from the air and can help reduce anxiety. 
  • Areca Palm – The Areca palm is a very popular air-purifying plant. This easy to care for plant is proven to remove harmful toxins from the air that affects the health of people. Therefore, this plant helps to lower anxiety levels and blood pressure, which in turn helps us to calm our mental and physical state thus protecting us from falling sick.
  • Lavender – The plant’s fragrance is believed to help reduce stress, anxiety and possibly even mild pain so having this plant around in your home can have so many added bonuses. 
  • Snake Plant – Can help improve indoor air by absorbing airborne toxic pollutants that impact your sleep, mood and energy levels. It’s the perfect low maintenance plant perfect for beginners!
  • Herbs – Different herbs like rosemary can help lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in your blood.  But also by having a basil plant in your herb box has anti-stress properties which help to relieve stress and anxiety.”
