Thompson & Morgan has launched Egg & Chips, a dual-cropping aubergine/potato.
First it was the TomTato; now Thompson & Morgan has launched Egg & Chips, a dual-cropping aubergine/potato. An aubergine plant grafted on to a heavy-cropping potato variety offers gardeners another ‘world first’ in two-in-one planting solutions.
The new plant has impressed the horticultural industry, making the finals of both the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year and the Fleuroselect Fleurostar awards – traditionally a bedding plant event.
Egg & Chips is more than just a novelty, says T&M: it lets you double up on space in the greenhouse, patio, balcony, veg patch or allotment, and the sturdy potato plant gives the aubergine part the vigour to grow strongly and harvest heavily under UK conditions. Above ground you can expect to harvest three or four large tasty aubergines. Below ground, you’ll get 2kg of delicious white potatoes.
Egg & Chips can be grown outside in a sunny sheltered spot and will crop right through to the first frosts – even longer if you can bring the pot indoors later in the season.
